What is latency?
Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to move across a network connection. When a packet is being sent, there is "latent" time, when the computer that sent the packet waits for confirmation that the packet has been received. Latency is generally measured in terms of milliseconds (ms). Other terms for latency are "ping time" and "round-trip time."
When using the Xcentric Cloud Network, excessive latency can be recognized in several ways:
- keystrokes are delayed
- applications appear to pause momentarily
- application windows become temporarily fragmented in appearance
These symptoms are generally seen when latency exceeds 150ms. Optimal latency is 100ms or less.
Testing latency
To test the latency on your Internet connection, use the following tools:- PingTest.net. The Ping time, measured in milliseconds is the measurement of your Internet connection's latency.
- Ping Command in Windows
- Click Start.. Run.. type "CMD"
- at the command prompt, type "ping login.xcentric.com"
- the "time=" will indicate latency in miliseconds
